Izamal- The Yellow City
Well hello there! I'm back after a little hiatus...and a little complication. I was taking a break and just when I was ready to start adding content again my keyboard stopped working. Just up and died. I just got a new keyboard in today and am so excited to start writing again.
Today's post is about a must visit city only about 1 hour from Merida.
Izamal is known as the yellow city as all the buildings are painted the same shade of yellow. It was painted in 1993 when Pope John Paul II visited. It houses the second largest atrium in the world and even has some ruins you can climb for free! There's a great city square with horse drawn carriages, shops, and food vendors to fill your tummy.
I recommend visiting the restaurant Kinich to get a taste of traditional Yucatecan food.
After everyone is done eating and full and feeling the need to burn off some calories just head left out of the restaurant until you reach Kinich Kak Moo, a ruin tucked behind the yellow walls which gives you spectacular views of the convent and surrounding areas. It's a climb but it's well worth it.
After taking in your beautiful surroundings head on down and walk to the convent to see the cute square with plenty of photo opportunities and the convent itself.
I really enjoy how in every city you visit there is sign to take a picture in front of. Be sure and visit the little shops on your way back to your car. They have really unique items!
And there you have it! The city of Izamal. This is a spot we would take all of our visitors to enjoy and it's only a short drive away!
Stay tuned for another cool spot we got to visit recently and I'm glad I'm up and running again!
