Why we decided to move to Mexico
Ok. Here we go!
Our little family is moving to Mexico! Yes, you heard that right. Why would we want to move to another country and leave the USA? What about the language, safety, school, housing? What about family and friends? So many questions! Well here's some answers.
But why?
We want to give ourselves and our children an opportunity to experience life outside of the "typical" life we are used to. We want to experience a different culture. Sometimes it seems that here, it's easy to get caught up in a fast paced way of life, always having to do something every hour of the day. Always needing the latest phone, car, tv, toys, and other things that we are being bombarded with everyday.
We want to simplify our lives. We want to be immersed in another culture and hopefully learn Spanish. We want to experience the "manana" factor. I'm sure it will take some getting used to, don't get me wrong, but we are ready to embrace it and try.
So, we sold our home. We sold our cars. We are currently selling EVERYTHING! It's a lot, let me tell you. But it feels amazing!
We didn't just randomly decide, "hey let's move to Mexico". We did our research, we visited, we calculated and planned, as I encourage all to do before moving to another country.
Is Mexico Safe?
This is always asked. Ones are always concerned when we say we are moving to Mexico because more often than not the first thing that comes into people's mind is the drugs, kidnappings, muggings, etc that we hear on the news. Nowhere in the world is completely safe. In every major US city there are places you know to avoid. There is crime no matter where you look. It's a matter of being informed and doing your research.
Here is a link to a crime rate report for Merida, Yucatan and Austin, TX:
Now, there are cities in Mexico that should be avoided. But, Merida, Yucatan is fairly safe. It was rated the second safest city in the Americas, after Quebec, Canada. Is it crime free? No. But again, knowing your surroundings and staying alert will keep you as safe as anywhere.
What about family and friends?
We, of course, will dearly miss our family and friends. One of the reasons we decided to try out Merida is because it's fairly easy to get in and out of. There are direct flights from Houston and only 2hrs flight time. We highly encourage our family and friends to visit us and we will also come back to visit every so often as well💗 We received a range of responses from people and that's ok. We know everyone loves and cares for us but we also know we've done our research and planned accordingly. You as well will get different responses and shouldn't take it to heart if some of them are negative.
Our family is excited for our adventure and fully support us, which we are grateful for. They also don't mind that they will have a nice vacation spot to go to in the future.
Schooling, housing, shopping?
We will continue homeschooling our children as it's been going pretty good. I have been homeschooling since my kids were of school age. Look for a post coming in the future all about homeschooling!
We will rent a place in Merida and will go through realtors to make sure things are as legit as possible. We are staying in an Airbnb in the meantime.
Merida has a great selection of shopping! There's Costco, Sam's club, Home Depot, Petco, and other supermarket and grocery stores to choose from. Walking through these stores make you feel like you are back in the US, exactly the same! There are also local supermarkets, specialty stores, and open-air markets. I'll do a post on these once we are there.
Malls are a big thing here so you have both normal malls and fancy malls with skating rinks. They have H&M, Gap, and other well-known stores. Many are surprised to know that there's a Chili's, Texas Roadhouse, and more familiar places.
Will I miss Chick-fila? Yes, most definitely. Will I miss Trader Joe's? You betcha! But the pros outweigh the cons without a doubt.
Beginning April 2022 we will start our new adventure in Merida! Stay tuned for more posts!
